08.19.06 | Lisa Hearns to Open for Grammy Winning Artist Chris Botti

STATEN ISLAND RESIDENT, RECORDING ARTIST AND PEFORMER LISA HEARNS TO OPEN FOR GRAMMY AWARD WINNING INSTRUMENTALIST CHRIS BOTTI AT HISTORIC ST. GEORGE THEATRE, STATEN ISLAND, NY, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH.

STATEN ISLAND, August 19, 2006 – Staten Island’s historic St. George Theatre brings to the stage Staten Island resident and jazz vocalist Lisa Hearns to open for the Grammy award winning instrumentalist Chris Botti. Friday September 8th, the St. George Theatre will present an evening of jazz, the final show in this years’ series of summer concerts sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Hearns, a Berklee College of Music alumnus, local music teacher and musician will be backed by her jazz group, which features upright bassist Kelly Friesen, pianist Joseph Vincent Tranchina and drummer Taro Okamoto. Hearns is generating quite a buzz in the tri-state area and can frequently be heard playing in Staten Island. She has performed at festivals and clubs in and around New England, and has been making a name for herself on the scene in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as in Staten Island, her home of five years.

Music begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range in price from $38.00, up to $58.00 and $68.00, and are available at the St. George Theatre box office located at 35 Hyatt Street, Staten Island, NY, as well as thru Ticket Master. Visit the theatre online at www.stgeorgetheatre.com/ or call 718-442-2900 for more information. Cash bar and valet parking are available.

Although Hearns studied music throughout her childhood, it was not until her adolescence when she immersed herself into jazz and blues that she decided to pursue music as a career. She credits her early experiences in the blues scene in New York as having a profoundly inspirational effect on her. “It was as if a bell resonated deep within me, hearing the music of B.B. King, and Buddy Guy, who I then had the added thrill of meeting and gaining support from. Having that kind of foundation is something you never forget. It allowed me to see, first hand, how music knows no boundaries, and cuts across so many divisions that society tries to impose upon us.” Those early meetings in her life led Hearns to study jazz singing at Berklee where she completed her education in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music. She continued to perform and lead her own groups in New England until she moved to New York in September, 2001 to continue her singing career.

Hearns is the president of Berklee’s New York alumni chapter, a role she took on soon after moving to New York. As president of the college’s largest alumni chapter, Hearns leads a group of volunteers to create social, professional, and performance opportunities that include informational panel events, and showcases. She contributes news to Berklee’s alumni magazine, Berklee Today, and keeps more than 1,000 registered alumni informed of performance and job opportunities. “Serving as a board member, I hope to inspire more alumni to truly come together in support of each other and of the college.”

The musicians joining Hearns for her debut at the St. George Theatre also have some impressive credits, collectively having toured and recorded with many well respected jazz musicians. Canadian born bassist Kelly Friesen has played with jazz greats such as Herb Ellis, Bucky Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Warren Vache, and Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band. His unique style is featured on the sound track to the Woody Allen film, “Sweet and Lowdown.”

Pianist Joe Vincent Tranchina has performed in most of the major jazz venues throughout New York City and the surrounding areas, including Birdland, the Oak Room, the Blue Note, and the Iridium. In addition to his extensive experience as an accompanist for instrumentalists and vocalists, Joe has frequently accompanied master classes for vocal legends Mark Murphy and Sheila Jordan.

Drummer Taro Okamoto has played with such jazz notables as Reggie Workman, Duke Jordan, Barry Harris, Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Steve Grossman and many more.

03.21.06 | Berklee Appoints Performer and Recording Artist Lisa Hearns to Board of Trustees
Boston, MA, March 21, 2006 -- Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees Chair Allan T. McLean announces the appointment of Lisa Hearns to the Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees. A resident of Staten Island, Hearns is the president of Berklee’s New York Alumni Chapter. She is also an acclaimed blues and jazz musician, recording artist, a private piano and vocal instructor, and a Berklee graduate.

“When I read Berklee’s mission statement: ‘To educate, train and develop students to excel in music as a career,’ I realized that I had an incredible institution behind me, that truly wanted me to succeed,” says Hearns. “Berklee is very proud of our alumni and we want them to know how valued they are as members of the community. Serving as a board member, I hope to inspire more alumni to truly come together in support of each other and of the college.”

Says Berklee College of Music President Roger Brown: “Lisa Hearns is committed to helping Berklee connect even more strongly with our largest alumni concentration anywhere in the world -- New York City. She brings a sensitivity to alumni and to student needs, and also has great ideas for how Berklee can take advantage of its proximity to the vital New York music and arts scenes.”

Hearns grew up in a musical family and although she studied classical piano throughout her childhood, she didn’t become serious about music as a career until she discovered jazz and blues – especially the music of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins. She formed and led groups in New York City and then enrolled at Berklee, from where she graduated in 1996 with a degree in professional music.

As president of the college’s largest alumni chapter, Hearns leads a group of volunteers to create social, professional, and performance opportunities that include speaker panels, showcases, and the Berklee Jazz Masters Jam. She contributes news to Berklee’s alumni magazine, Berklee Today, and keeps more than 1,000 registered alumni informed of performance and job opportunities. One of her popular programming efforts is the New York Alumni Songwriters Forum, which features various guest artists and experts from the music industry like songwriter Eve Nelson ‘86, Man Made Music sonic branding and production company founder Joel Beckerman, and music publisher Barbara Jordan.

Hearns is a member of the Manhattan Association of Cabaret, and served on the board of the New England Blues Society for several years while she was in Boston. Hearns has a number of professional recordings to her credit, including a CD of contemporary blues and r&b, Give Yourself Freely, for which she wrote eight of the 10 tracks. She performs blues and jazz at clubs in Greenwich Village, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and throughout the New York tri-state area.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over 60 years, the college has evolved to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today – and tomorrow.
